The fence that faces the school run
Twice a day, every parent, grandparent and passing driver looks at your school fence. That's prime space, and printed school banners turn it into a noticeboard nobody can miss. Open evening next Thursday. Admissions for September. Well done to the under-11s. One banner, tied to the railings, does the job of a hundred letters home that never make it out of book bags.
Printed school banners for every point in the year
- Autumn recruitment: Admissions Open Banners and Open Day Banners.
- Good news: Ofsted Banners for sharing an inspection outcome.
- Summer term: Sports Day Banners for the field and the finish line.
- Early years: Nursery and Day Care Banners for gates and entrances.
- Further and higher education: College and University Banners, plus Freshers Week Banners for the September rush.
- Everything else: general School Banners for gates, halls and events.
Material and finishing
All printed school banners in this range are 440gsm PVC, a solid banner material with bright colours that read well from the road. For an outside fence, choose hemmed edges and metal eyelets, especially if the banner stays up all term. Plastic eyelets and unhemmed edges are there for indoor or short-term use, and cable ties come in one or two bags. If the fence is long, open and exposed to wind, mesh banners let the wind through.
Sizes and how to measure
Measure between the posts you'll tie to, not the whole fence. Long, narrow sizes like 8 ft × 3 ft (2438 × 914 mm) or 10 ft × 3 ft (3048 × 914 mm) sit neatly along railings. In a hall, 6 ft × 3 ft (1829 × 914 mm) or 4 ft 11 in × 3 ft 3 in (1500 × 1000 mm) is often plenty. There are 13 stock sizes in total, from 4 ft × 2 ft (1219 × 610 mm) to 9 ft 10 in × 6 ft 7 in (3000 × 2000 mm), all in the size table near the top of the page. Printed school banners can be ordered 1 to 99 of a design, so a trust can put the same open day message outside every school.
Artwork for printed school banners
- Send the crest or logo as a vector file (PDF, AI, EPS or SVG) so it stays sharp at banner size.
- Drivers read in a few seconds: headline, date, web address. Leave the long paragraph for the newsletter.
- Allow roughly 25 mm of capital height for every 3 metres of reading distance. From 15 metres, that's capitals around 125 mm tall.
- Keep text 50 mm from the edges, clear of hems and eyelets.
- If you use the Ofsted logo or rating wording, check Ofsted's current guidance on how it may be shown.
A Word, PowerPoint or Canva file is fine as a starting point. Upload a print-ready file, use the free online designer, or book our paid artwork service. An automatic check reads every uploaded file for size and resolution. See the artwork guidelines.
Timing and delivery to schools
Standard production is 4 working days, express from 2 working days and saver 6, counted from when your order and artwork are confirmed. Printed school banners are made to order and dispatched from the UK. Someone needs to sign for the parcel, so avoid delivery during holidays or add a note at checkout about site access. UK mainland delivery is £7.95, free on orders of £100 or more after discounts (artwork fees excluded). Mainland Highlands add £10. Northern Ireland, the Scottish islands, the Isle of Man, the Channel Islands, the Isles of Scilly and the Isle of Wight are quoted. Items over 3 m on any side add £15. School & Education Banners: questions answered
Our school just got a good Ofsted. What is an Ofsted banner?
A way of telling every parent at pick-up about your result. Ofsted Banners go up on railings or the main gate and carry your own words and logo. They are printed on 440gsm PVC, with 13 sizes to choose from, and you decide on hemming and eyelets when you order.
Can our banner stay on the school fence for a whole term?
It can. Order it hemmed with metal eyelets, then use a cable tie in each eyelet so nothing sags. On an exposed fence that catches a lot of wind, think about mesh instead, since the air passes through and the ties are under far less pressure than with solid PVC.
Is there a banner designed for nurseries?
Yes. Nursery and Day Care Banners are meant for the railings, gates and front doors of nurseries and childminders. Material and sizes match the school banners. For a gate that parents see from the pavement, a 6 × 3 ft banner is a favourite.
What should we put on an admissions banner?
As little as possible. Your school's name, a line saying places are open, which year or intake, and where to find out more online. Parents driving past only get a few seconds, and short wording means you can make every letter larger. Lead with the line that matters most.
How long does a school banner take?
School banners are ready to dispatch 6 working days after your artwork is confirmed on the Saver speed, then the courier usually takes 1 to 3 working days. For an open day or sports day, order two to three weeks ahead.
Can the banner carry our school badge?
Yes. Upload the badge in the online designer or send a print-ready file. A low-resolution badge is flagged before payment, and you can then upload a better file, send it later, add File check for £4.99 or ask our design service to redraw it.
